Dr. Peter Cappelli has a new book coming out on the intersection of talent management and supply chain management. It looks like it will provide fresh perspective on how to think about talent management.

Jim,
You blogged this the very day HR-XML was engaged in some quite intensive discussions with a group of "supply-chainers" at our Atlanta meeting. The point is to examine best practices we can borrow. We met with representatives of companies like Infor that have a leg in both the supply-chain management and workforce management.
People are not widgets (you don't need to schedule and interview widgets; widgets usually depreciate - people are more complex - they can both appreciate/depreciate; widgets don't get dispirited and go work for a competitor; etc.). That said, the problems Cappelli points out are rooted in poor access to information and problem processes.
Having been involved in active liaison with groups promoting supply-chain standards and best practices, I can say that there is still much for talent management providers to learn and apply from peers in supply-chain management. We definitely will be building in supply chain best practices in the forthcoming HR-XML 3.0.
